Salt Company at Cornerstone Church!
Here’s the Embassy Suites! This is where the Spring retreat took place!!
Hey, guys. So I wasn’t fully up with my continuation of reading through the New Testament, book of Mathew on Friday. Friday night was the startof the Salt Company spring retreat at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines. The retreat was focusing on the Bride of Christ; aka the Church as a community; the body of Christ. Overall. I’d say it was such an uplifting weekend for me. God revealed to me and helped me understand what the reputation of the Bride should be, the message of the Bride, unity as the Bride, and our mission as the Bride.
Friday Night: The Reputation of the Bride – Paul Sabino
So, Paul started the message with verses in 2 Corinthians 11:2-3. Basically what those are saying, Jesus want’s a pure bride to be married to. As the body of Christ, God calls us to be purified from all sin. Sexual immorality is a huge thing. Purity. Slander. Greed. etc. Every time you sin, it’s like you’ve taken a baby step away from Jesus. Paul used this really well:
“Oh you know, I looked at porn once this week.” Baby step. “I only got greedy a couple times this week”. Baby Step. “I only touched my girlfriend/boyfriend a 3 or 4 times this week.” Another baby step!
Every single step, adds up. It’s just like traditionally spending money on a certain item like a soda or coffee every morning, or cigarettes. the more and more times you purchase that item, that money is going to add up. Just like your sins. Each small little sin is going to add up and TEAR YOU DOWN. God wants us to be pure as a Brides, without any sin.
We need to set a good example as Christians and the body of Christ.
My response to Paul’s message is just, it makes me more dedicated to the body of Christ. Honestly, after this message, I didn’t quite understand what was meant by the Bride but as the weekend went on, I learned so much more!
Saturday Morning: The Message of the Bride – Jeff Dodge
Jeff Dodge.. Follow him on Twitter: @jdodgex6. Jeff used to term ‘curator’ to describe what we need to be doing with with God’s word. For those of you who don’t know, a curator is that guy who works in a museum and he has two rolls:
Some other smaller notes and points that was pointed out was in Mathew 23:1-4:
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.”
Such hypocrisy! We cannot tolerate pompous teachings. It’s okay to listen to what they say because what they say is truth. But they do not act on their truth. It says that right there in verse 3. “So you must obey them and do what they tell you. But do not do what they, for they do not practice what they preach.”
If you’re a leader, do you practice what you preach? If you’re not a leader, don’t you look up to your leaders?
For sure.. not quite sure where I was going with that question but whatevz. Moving on!
Saturday Night: Together as a Bride – Bob Thune
1 Corinthians 12:12->
Bob talked about us Christians being together as the Bride, as a community, and the body of Christ! The body of Christ is a community filled with members and each member has their own particular roll/spiritual gift that God has blessed us with. All of us Christians as a whole = the body. We are each a part of the body with our own rolls, some of us are eyes, some are hands. What do you think that YOUR roll in the body of Christ is? I personally feel like my spiritual gift that God has blessed me with is pure honesty and openness, especially when it comes to confession and where I’m at spiritually. Another gift that I feel God has blessed me with is the ability of leadership. I see God leading me to leadership in the high school ministry at Cornerstone called Escape22 and that would just be awesome!!
There are a couple of errors that we have made/make when it comes to our rolls and such. One of them is insecurity which basically means that you have that feeling of inadequacy. It’s when you don’t feel like you belong in the body of Christ and your roll is not significant to the Church.
The other mistake people make is that feeling of independence where you feel like you are a better Christian than some and you look at someone and doubt their roll as a member of the church. A lot of it is pride, you feel like because you’re a leader, you’re a better Christian than most. No one is a better Christian than any other Christian.
As Christians, we need to get our eyes off of ourselves and start focusing on the Church as a whole! 1 Corinthians 12:13a says: “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body -”
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! (thumbs up for High School Musical reference)
Sunday Morning: The Mission of the Bride (Overall) – Troy Nesbitt

So.. anyways, The Church: The bride, THE FAMILY OF GOD!
Chapter One:
The Birth of Jesus.. Before Mary and Joseph got married, Mary was found pregnant through the Holy Spirit. It’s Jesus and he was born because he will save his people from their sins (:21).
Chapter Two:
11 On coming to the house, they say the child with his mother Mary, and the bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
In chapter two. The three “wise men” were truly wise. Their response to seeing Jesus was instantly to bow and to worship Him and to present Him with treasures.. And then there was Herod who was threatened wanted Jesus Dead. Total rejection.
Here’s a couple things to think about…
Are you like the “wise men” and worshiping Jesus like you should? Do you take things that you view as “treasures” and offer them to Jesus as gifts? or.. are you like Herod and giving Jesus total rejection? People in our society today go one of two ways.. either they give Jesus total acceptance, or total rejections.
That is always the response to Jesus. Either true worship or total rejection. There is no middle ground. - Troy Nesbit.
Worship Today, dudes!!
